This dessert was definitely large enough to share. The name led me to expect a crispy burnt sugar crust, but the topping was instead more like caramel. Bob Taylor’s Original Ranch House stands as a unique destination for Las Vegas locals and adventurous tourists. Opened in 1955, it is the city’s oldest steakhouse. Located just off Ann Road near I-95 in northwest Las Vegas, the Ranch House originally stood beyond the edges of suburban development, even as recently as ten years ago. Now, I-215 is visible to the north, a subdivision flanks the restaurant to the south, and strip malls light up the view to the west.

The Western-inspired, 11,700-square-foot house on the property has 34 rooms, including a bar and casino room with spinning, colored lights. The compound includes a pool, a faded tennis court and the stables-turned-living quarters and offices. The structures take up just seven acres of the rugged hillside property.

Roni’s lamb was coated with mustard and rosemary, classic flavor combinations, but what surprised me was how awesome the meat was. It was the best lamb I’ve ever had in Las Vegas, period. The Ranch House potatoes are basically hash browns, spuds mixed with cheese and mushrooms.

Al Jolson and his wife, Ruby Keeler, lived on a five-acre spread on Louise Avenue in Encino that had a waterfall and a koi-stocked lagoon. Liberace’s backyard pool on Valley Vista Boulevard in North Hollywood was built in the shape of a grand piano, with 88 black and white keys painted at the shallow end.
